IWD Film Screening: ‘Kill Bill, Vol. 1’
March 5 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
March 8 is International Women’s Day, and what better way to celebrate the strength, resilience and general badassery of women than a screening of this blood-soaked Tarantino masterpiece?
The first of two films, Kill Bill: Volume 1 tells the story of The Bride (Uma Thurman), an ex-assassin trying to leave her hit squad and start a new life. When she is beaten, shot and left for dead (along with her unborn child) on her wedding day, she wakes from a four-year coma and swears revenge. Her journey takes her to Japan, where she battles the Tokyo yakuza and their private army, the Crazy 88.
This hyper-stylised action film draws inspiration from grindhouse classics, martial arts movies, samurai cinema and spaghetti westerns in equal measure. Featuring anime sequences, intense combat and sharp dialogue, Kill Bill is a thoroughly entertaining work of cinema, led by a powerful female protagonist.
Free pizza will be served in the lobby from 5.30pm, and from 6pm, guest speakers will discuss the film’s themes and characterisation of women. The film will commence at 6.30pm.
This film is rated R18+ (high level violence), and is not suitable for children.
