Online Webinar: Logic and Rhetoric – How to Think and Argue
November 12 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Logic and rhetoric are skills you can use in every aspect of life. They are ancient skills that have stood the test of time. Just a few basics go a long way: want to convince people of the truth, see through lies and deception, spot flaws in an argument, influence politics, persuade your boss, conciliate disputes, win a court case, get a good mark for your essay or change the world?
In this course, we learn principles of logic from the philosophers who invented them, and rhetoric from some of the greatest speech makers in history. Convinced? It’s because of Logos, Pathos and Ethos, so come along to learn more.
As the University of Newcastle no longer offers courses in Philosophy, we’ve partnered with Dr Bill Pascoe to run a series of workshops and online webinars on key philosophical concepts, so you can still access this vital academic discipline.
Throughout this six-week series, we will deal with subjects like how to reason and argue, power and freedom, morality and ethics, truth and knowledge, money and culture, post-humans and information, justice, and reality itself.
Philosophy is more important than ever in this post-truth era.

Dr Bill Pascoe is a former student and life long reader of philosophy and literature, and a software developer, now specialising in Digital Humanities.
The Callaghan workshop and online webinar for each topic are identical. To access the content and participate in the discussion, you are welcome to attend either!
To access the online webinar, go to the Online Workshops page of our website and click ‘Enter the Online Clubhouse’. Try to log on five minutes early, so we can start on time.
