Online Webinar: What Even *is* Philosophy?

September 17, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

To access the Online Clubhouse for this webinar, go to the Online Workshops page of our website and click ‘Enter the Online Clubhouse’. Try to log on five minutes early if possible to set up your webcam and/or mic (if you are using either of these).

As the University of Newcastle no longer offers courses in Philosophy, we’ve partnered with Dr Bill Pascoe to run a series of workshops and online webinars on key philosophical concepts, so you can still access this vital academic discipline.

The word ‘philosophy’ comes from ancient Greek and means ‘love of wisdom.’ With philosophy, we can better understand how we came to be where we are today, both personally and as a society, and with that understanding, to perceive what we should do about it and how. Understanding philosophical topics like logic, ethics and deconstruction can help you understand and solve complex problems in life and at work.

Philosophy doesn’t qualify you for a job, it qualifies you for any job. It teaches you strategies to deal with reality and be more than just useful. Philosophy is the highest level of attainment in any subject area, taking us deep into the theoretical foundations of a subject. It helps you advance your field instead of just work within it, to change your life and get and maintain your own liberty, and to influence society and politics. It can also help you spot bullshit and make a convincing argument at work, in politics, or at the pub or cafe.

You will help decide what topics we cover in this six-week series, but we aim to deal with subjects like how to reason and argue, power and freedom, morality and ethics, truth and knowledge, money and culture, post-humans and information, justice, and reality itself.

Philosophy is more important than ever in this post-truth era.

Attendance is free and totally optional for any workshop. Each workshop will cover one topic, with a short lesson followed by open discussion.

In this introductory session, we will discuss views of what philosophy is, what scope it has, what types of it there are, and ways of learning about it, touching on Western and Non-Western philosophy, ancient and modern, with a little detail on the Presocratics. You will also have the opportunity to help choose topics for the rest of the course.

The Callaghan workshop and online webinar for each topic are identical. To access the content and participate in discussion, you are welcome to attend either!

Dr Bill Pascoe is a former student and life long reader of philosophy and literature, and a software developer, now specialising in Digital Humanities.
