Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? Feel trapped behind your desk? Well perhaps you need to get up and move!
The simple act of walking can stimulate thinking and promote creativity. In fact, very successful people like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are notorious for holding meetings “on foot”. And there’s no reason you can’t do the same.
Throughout the semester, Learning Development will be holding regular “research walks”; and all HDR students are welcome to participate as often as they like. During these sessions, you will be partnered up with fellow postgraduates and encouraged to talk as you walk, to promote deep thinking and encourage new ideas.
5 minutes: Meet at HA108 and pair off.
20 minutes: Commence walk. One member of each pair can talk about what they are working on at that point in time. Their partner only needs to respond or interject with simple prompting questions.
5 minutes: Silent walking.
20 minutes: Reverse roles as walk continues.
5 minutes: Return to HA108 and group debrief/reflection
To participate in a research walk, you must register. You must be punctual as the walkers will depart the meeting location at the starting time. We will not wait for you!
There is no need to come prepared. The thoughts you convey to your partner need only be that: thoughts! It is not about the quality of your work but instead about allowing you to think aloud, and therefore deeply!
So… let’s get out and enjoy the Callaghan bushland. Don’t forget your Aeroguard (seriously – Callaghan is a mosquito breeding ground), and wear safe, enclosed shoes.
NB: Walks will be cancelled or rescheduled in the event of wet weather. You will be notified of any changes the
morning of the event, so please be sure to check your email.
