Your research may be your primary focus during your candidature, but actually writing your thesis is an art in itself. And if you’re a coursework student, you’ll find yourself writing no end of assignments in the course of your degree.
The key to success (as people will often tell you) is to start early, but sitting down to write any extended work is daunting. Fear and procrastination and a thousand little distractions can all slow you down and halt the creative process.
Thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone. Shut Up and Write! is a series of communal writing sessions that began in San Francisco, but which has since become quite successful at universities all over the world. Students come together to sit quietly, free of distractions and warring commitments, and just – write!
Each session is structured according to the Pomodoro Technique, a method of time management that divides your work into 25-minute bursts and 5-minute breaks, keeping you refreshed and on task.
If you find that you’re often distracted when you try to write at home or at the office, come along and give it a try. With a dedicated writing space and a group of other students working around you, it’s astonishing how productive you can be.
