Hello all! This issue brings us into the month of Women in Robes, where we celebrate all things women and all things robes! Women in gowns, women in dressing gowns, women in graduation robes, women in ghost robes, women in … wardrobes? Well, you get the idea. This month, Network of Women Students Australia (NOWSA) annual conference is being hosted at NewSpace by NUSA, CAPA, NUPSA, NUS and NATSIPA. This is a wonderful opportunity to be inspired by women in our community and from across the country, network with fellow students, and explore the issues impacting female-identifying people in the higher education sector. We are even running some postgraduate panels across the three days, so keep an eye out for those!

Speaking of the words of women, we have also hired a new Student Communications Officer! Sarah will be sharing words of wisdom on a variety of issues and events that affect postgrad students, and you can see her first article this month on the changes to HECS debt repayment and how you may be affected. To top off the month, Georgia and I will be running trivia themed around Women! Of course, no trivia night is the same without Hugh, but he is taking some well-earned time off, so we will see how we go holding the fort. Bear with us, have faith in us, and come along (don’t judge us too harshly)!

Thank you to those who came along to celebrate our 1000 likes at The Family Hotel! It was lovely to see some familiar faces, and some not so familiar ones as we celebrated our raging popularity and fame. How we will walk down Hunter street unrecognised from now on is beyond me. Alas, we strive on. Hopefully we will see many of you at our next TGI Friday, but until then, we have some new workshops coming up. Georgia and Richard Thorpe will be running a workshop on applying for work in Australia aimed at the partners of postgraduate students. We know that it can be difficult settling into the HDR experience, let alone trying to settle into a new country with your family too. This workshop will go over resume writing, cover letters and the application process to help your partner find work in Australia (please note that UoN students can get career and job advice from the Careers service here: https://www.newcastle.edu.au/current-students/support/careers-jobs-and-your-future). If there is another workshop or seminar you would like NUPSA to run, please send us an email and let us know! We are currently laying plans for the rest of the year, and would love to hear what you have in mind.

Finally, as the end of the year approaches ever faster, we have started planning our Annual dinner. For those of you who are in their first year of postgrad study, NUPSA hosts an Annual dinner for students and staff to celebrate the year. On the night, we present awards for Supervisor of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Online Teacher of the Year and Helper of the Year. These awards recognise individuals that have gone above and beyond the expectations of their role to guide, support and inspire their students. NUPSA also awards the title of Student of the Year to a postgraduate student who embodies the UON Code of Conduct. We will let you know when the forms are available, but in anticipation of nominations opening, I’d encourage you to start thinking about who you might like to nominate!

Well that’s it from me this month, but as always, stay safe, study hard, and don’t forget to enjoy yourself too 😊!

Ash McIntyre
NUPSA President
