Film Screening: ‘The Castle’

January 22 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
ATC210, Advanced Technology Building, ATC210, Advanced Technology Building
Callaghan, NSW 2308 Australia

We’ve got plenty of great films to share with you in 2019, but first up – to commemorate Australia Day in January – we’re screening the 1997 Aussie classic, The Castle. The film follows the Kerrigan family, who take great pride in their modest house and lifestyle in the outer Melbourne blue-collar suburb of Coolaroo. Their happiness is threatened, however, when developers attempt the compulsory acquisition of their house to expand the neighbouring airport. To save their home, they'll need to win a David and Goliath court battle – with some unexpected…

During the day, we'll be holding a sandcastle-building competition, with a prize for whoever builds the most spectacular architectural marvel of sandcastlery. We also strongly encourage you to bury…

Workshop: Self-Care

February 4 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Clubhouse, Underneath Bar on the Hill
Callaghan Campus, NSW 2308 Australia

Postgraduate study, as you know, is a 3- to 5-year marathon, and it can be enormously taxing on your physical and mental health. While most of us generally pay attention to our physical needs (such as maintaining good nutrition and regular sleep/exercise), many postgrads are less accustomed to addressing their psychological and social needs. We often feel we're too busy to socialise or do things we enjoy, and see these things as less important or 'useful' to us in our…

Hey there, biomeds! To kick off our calendar of HMRI events for the year, we're hosting a Friday night BBQ dinner and a film screening of the beloved Australian classic, Kenny. Kenny is a mockumentary that follows the daily life of affable (and eternally optimistic) Kenny Smyth, a man working for a Melbourne portable toilet company. Kenny loves his job and weaves portable toilets into his personal life philosophy, despite the ridicule he often receives. When he is invited to a…

It is also overwhelmingly our most requested activity, and we want to ensure it is something you all have access to as a method of self-care. We're very fortunate to have partnered with Ali Yousefi (Alex), a PhD student and experienced yoga instructor, to…
