International Postgraduate Student Mentors
Starting a postgrad degree is already an enormous challenge, but it can be even harder for international students. Leaving your home, friends and family behind, and adapting to a new country, culture and people, all while navigating the trials and tribulations of the student experience… It can feel quite overwhelming at first.
A lot of international postgrad students have shared stories like this, and based on their feedback, we launched our NUPSA International Postgraduate Student Mentor program!
This program aims to help incoming postgrad international students settle into university life, by partnering them with a confirmed postgrad student mentor upon accepting their offer of enrolment from the University. We want to build a community of students that support each other in moving to Newcastle and commencing their postgraduate studies at UON.
Our mentors are all postgrad students who are at least a year into their degrees. Supported by NUPSA, they volunteer their time to assist incoming students by answering questions, sharing experiences, and providing resources that they found useful, or would have liked to have access to, before they arrived.
Each mentee is paired with their mentor according to several categories: language, gender (where relevant), research/coursework, faculty (where possible), whether they are an ALLY (a friend to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Intersex community), and whether they have dependants with them in Australia. Our aim is to match each student with a mentor who speaks their preferred language, giving them the chance to converse more comfortably in their native tongue.
To keep this program running, though, we need as many diverse and enthusiastic International Postgraduate Student Mentors as possible. We need you!
Student mentor, eh? What do I get out of it?
- As this is a registered volunteering program, you will be able to add it to your CV!
- You’ll get the opportunity to help someone who’s facing the same challenges you had when you started. 😊
Sounds good! What do I need to do?
- Read through the International Postgraduate Student Mentor official position description.
- Go to the University of Newcastle’s volunteering page. You’ll need to make a new account if you don’t have one already (don’t worry, it only takes a minute!).
Once you’ve registered your interest, we’ll get in touch with you to organise your induction and help set up your profile. After that, we’ll let you know when we have a mentee for you to assist!
